We have added this digestive enzyme mixture to our website as it may be able to help those suffering from bloating and gas production as part of their irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. The effectiveness of a digestive enzyme mixture is based on the theory that many IBS sufferers are deficient in digestive enzymes because of a distorted diet or perhaps a damaged digestive tract lining.  Without the specific enzymes necessary to break down starches into sugars, proteins into amino acids and fats into acids, our food remains partially undigested and difficult to pass. Taking an enzyme supplement will in theory increase the speed of digestion and therefore improve absorbtion of the essential amino acids, fatty acids and sugars we need for metabolism and energy.  The reduced level of complex carbohydrates, fats and protein will also help to reduce the levels of bad bacteria which can often colonise the gut which create bloating, gas and bad odours.

Enzymes are natural chemicals, produced by foods and our own bodies, that digest large molecules into smaller building blocks.

The Enzyme Digest product provides enzymes for digestion of the major dietary components - fats, proteins and carbohydrates, inlcuding starches.

Betaine hydrochloride is a non-essential nutrient and a source of hydrochloric acid, a naturally occurring chemical in the stomach that helps digest food by breaking up fats and proteins. In particular, Betaine HCL is necessary for adequate absorption of protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron. The low pH of the stomach's hydrochloric acid also destroys ingested bacteria and microorganisms.

Does it work?

The digestive enzymes certainly function as they describe in helping to break down fats, protein and starch and it certainly appears to be true that we all have less digestive enzymes produced as we get older. However, we have not found any clinical studies to support the theory that undigested food exacerbates IBS and that enzymes can relieve the symptoms. On the internet, on many sites and blogs we have found may testimonials saying that they do help with symptoms.
