We have included Kolanticon as it contains both an antispasmodic and an active ingredient which combats flatulence and bloating. The product was in the past mostly known for it antacid activity. Interestingly the antacid is still part of the formulation.

Kolanticon was granted a license for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in June 2007. It has been approved by the UK authorities for the treatment and prophylaxis of:

• Smooth muscle spasms, including IBS
• Flatulence
• Hyperacidity 

Kolanticon is also approved for the treatment of Peptic Ulcers and functional dyspepsia symptoms, especially in patients when gastric distress results from hyperacidity.

Dosage

The recommended dosage is:

Two to four 5ml spoonfulls every four hours as required

Does it work?

Based on the active ingredients in the product there is good evidence of efficacy.

Dicycloverine - It relieves muscle spasms and cramping in the gastrointestinal tract by blocking the activity of acetylcholine on cholinergic (or muscarinic) receptors on the surface of muscle cells. It is a smooth muscle relaxant.

Simethicone - It's clinical use is based on its antifoam properties demonstrated in vitro . It is indicated in the treatment of functional conditions in which the retention of gas may be a problem

Aluminium hydroxide and Magnesium oxide - The hydroxide reacts with excess acid in the stomach, reducing its acidity. This decrease of acidity of the contents of the stomach may in turn help to relieve the symptoms of ulcers, heartburn or dyspepsia. It can also cause constipation and is therefore often used with magnesium oxide, which have counterbalancing laxative effects.
