Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Some women find that this vitamin helps combat fluid retention, irritability and feelings of tiredness and lethargy. It is particularly helpful for premenstrual headache and it may help breast soreness too. It seems to be quite safe and is free from side-effects if taken carefully.
A number of studies have shown the effectiveness of vitamin B6 on PMS. Vitamin B6 plays a vital part in synthesising certain brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that control your mood and behaviour. In order for your body to convert B6 (as pyridoxine) into its active form (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) which your body can use, it needs other nutrients such as magnesium. So if you take B6 on its own but are deficient in other nutrients your body may not be able to use that B6 properly.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a major role in human metabolism. It is considered to be the maser vitamin for the proper processing of amino acids - it is the building blocks of all proteins as well as some of your hormones.
Aside from these, pyridoxine aids in the formation of a few neurotransmitters and is an essential nutrient for mental process and mood regulations.
In combination with other B vitamins, vitamin B6 pyridoxine lowers your homocysteine levels, which is important for controlling physiological functions and decreasing the likeliness for a stroke or heart diseases, osteoporosis and even Alzheimer's.

Vitamin B6 is usually safe to take for up to 200 milligrams per day. Intakes of more than this recommended dose can lead to neurological side effects. This is caused by the fact that pyridoxine plays a major role in the nervous function in your body. Occasional cases of chest pain, skin rashes, upset stomach, fatigue, loss of appetite and breathing problems have also been reported.
Does it work?
Researchers from North Staffordshire Hospital and Keele University looked at the results of previously conducted trials and published in the British Medical Journal.
In total, they looked at nine studies that involved nearly 1,000 women. The women took either vitamin B6 or a placebo pill.
Analysis of the various findings showed that B6 was twice as effective as the placebo in relieving pre-menstrual syndrome.
The research also found that very high daily doses - 600mg for instance - were no more beneficial than lower ones and they recommend that women who want to treat their symptoms should start off with around 50mg a day and take no more than 100.
The investigators, said: "Results suggest that doses of vitamin B6 up to 100mg/day are likely to be of benefit in treating pre-menstrual symptoms and pre-menstrual depression."
She added that their study "found no evidence of neurological side effects from vitamin B6 at doses of 50-100mg".
