Peppermint oil is well known to be effective in treating the cramping symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), however you need to ensure that the oil gets to your bowel so taking peppermints or standard preparations won’t work. In Colpermin the peppermint oil is protected, so that it is released where it is needed, and is proven to give effective relief.

Here’s the background - peppermint oil is known to help digestion and the herbal medicine experts having been prescribing peppermint oil for centuries. Its effectiveness for treating the symptoms of IBS has also been known for a number of years and therefore peppermint oil is available in small volumes for sale in chemists and other high street outlets. However in this liquid form it is fairly ineffective for a number of reasons:

Peppermint oil is a volatile liquid made up of a wide range of components, different peppermint oils contain a different percentage of each of these components therefore getting a standard product is difficult,

The oils evaporate fairly quickly and as some of these components evaporate at different rates the peppermint oil can quickly become unbalanced.

Lastly and perhaps most important, peppermint oil is not very stable at acid pH therefore does not remain intact as it hits the stomach acids so doesn’t really get to where it needs to be to be effective.

To overcome these problems peppermint oil needs to be coated to stop evaporation and to protect against acid pH. There are very few that have this formulation. Colpermin® is available in capsule form and trials have been conducted demonstrating its effectiveness at relieving the painful spasm and the uncomfortable bloating of IBS. The capsule’s enteric coating ensures that it remains intact as it passes through the stomach acids and the small intestine. Once in the large intestine the active ingredient, peppermint oil, is slowly released for maximum effect and relief.

Dosage
Adults

One capsule should be taken three times a day with a glass of water. Do not take the capsule immediately after food. If the pain and discomfort is more severe, the dose can be increased to a maximum of two capsules three times a day.

Does it work?
There is a well documented clinical study which used 110 outpatients suffering from symptoms of IBS. In the trial 79% given Colpermin® experienced an alleviation of the severity of abdominal pain (29 were pain-free); 43 (83%) had less abdominal distension, 43 (83%) had reduced stool frequency, 38 (73%) had fewer borborygmi, and 41 (79%) less flatulence
