We came across Saccharomyces boulardii, when researching the benefits of brewers yeast on digestion. This particular yeast strain which is closely related to the common brewers years Saccharomyces cerevisiae is widely used outside the UK in particularly Germany, France, Scandinavia and more recently in the USA particularly to help the body recover from episodes of diarrhoea.
In Germany it is one of the most frequently prescribed off-label drugs, we have heard it said that about 80% of the population uses this product at one time or another.
In the UK Sacch boulardii is not widely available, however we have managed to locate a product called Diarsafe which is basically Sacch boulardii in a tablet form.
Unlike probiotic bacteria, Sacch boulardii easily survives stomach and bile acids and appears to help re-establish a normal gut function which would be clearly beneficial to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) sufferers.
The literature suggests that it can help particularly against antibiotic associated diarrhoea and helps with Traveller’s diarrhoea’.
Note – Saccharomyces boulardii is NOT related to the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans, similarly with bacteria there are good yeast as well as bad yeast and Saccharomyces boulardii is like brewers yeast firmly in the good yeast group.
Dosage
DiarSafe® can be given to adults and children (over 2 years) with the following recommendations:
Take one to two capsules daily depending on severity of symptoms or as professionally directed.
For young children (under 8 years) or any patient unable to swallow capsules, the content of the capsules can be mixed with a cold meal or beverage.
Does it work?
There has been a wide number of clinical studies into the effectiveness of Saccharomyces boulardii in digestive disorders, particularly associated with anti-biotic induced diarrhoea and infection control.
