Eat a wide range of foods
Eat a mix of foods
Nutritionists and dieticians always suggest that you should have a good healthy balanced diet.
The secret really appears to be that the only way to ensure that we have the whole gambit of nutrients, vitamins etc is to ensure that we have a good mix.
In an effort to find out what has caused our IBS we try to exclude certain foods in a belief we have food intolerances. However by excluding certain foods we risk missing out on important beneficial food groups, creating a spiral of effects that could make it even harder to recover.
If we have a food allergy this can be measured so it is worth seeing a specialist that can test your immune response to specific foods.
You can have your blood tested to find out if you have an allergy to a specific food, talk to your GP or get tested privately.
Or you can test yourself by buying a kit from York Test or a similar suppliers:
This will help you feel sure that your observation is real or not. With the specialist’s help you can identify alternative foods that will ensure you get the missing nutrients.
Being sure, will help you build your confidence that food allergy is not the cause of your IBS and enable you to get balance back into your diet.
By the way, in our research to explore how diets can affect IBS we looked at the background behind increasing fibre in your diet. Soluble fibre from products such as Fybogel have been shown to work, but recent studies have shown that increasing insoluble dietary fibre (from the foods we eat), has no beneficial effect on IBS.
