Can drinking water help treat IBS?
Have a glass or bottle of water to hand
“Drink plenty of water” is the standard advice of all nutritionists and dieticians but how can it help with IBS and how can we do something practical to facilitate it?
Our suggestion – consciously have a glass or bottle of water to hand; whether at work, in the car, at home, or at a restaurant. This will help with all aspects of your digestive processes whether constipation or diahrrea related.
Apparently according to a recent BBC Truth About Food programme the advice on the quantity required came from an American study in the 1960’s which suggested that you need 2.5litres a day for the body to function properly. However its conclusions noted that you can get two thirds of this from the water contained in food and other drinks, so the amount of additional water we need to drink may be less than we have been encouraged to believe.

We suggest that IBS sufferers should still focus on drinking extra water – after all if we have diarrhoea or constipation then the water balance in our system can’t be right! If you are taking soluble fibre you will need to drink more to ensure that it works properly.
