Star Flower Oil
Borage or starflower oil is extracted from the blue star shaped Borage flower. The active component of borage oil is an essential fatty acid Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). Borage oil is now thought to be a very superior source of GLA. Starflower oil contains 22% GLA. This is far higher than the amount of GLA found in Evening Primrose Oil.
Star Flower Oil (Borage) is rich in oleic and palmitic acid, conferring a hypocholesterolemic effect.
A great deal has been written on the role that GLA plays in helping to relieve the symptoms of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). One of the primary causes of PMS is thought to be due
to a prostaglandin imbalance. The prostaglandins work in the body regulating the size of blood vessels, influencing the amount of water exreted from the kidneys and thus can
influence blood pressure, cause headaches and give rise to menstrual cramping. The building blocks of the prostaglandins are the essential fatty acids. If a women’s diet is deficient in essential fatty acids, then prostaglandin balance will be upset and PMS symptoms may present. By supplementing with GLA many women have found the symptoms of breast tenderness, mood swings and water retention to be relieved.
This oil, which has recently been commercialised, may regulate metabolism and the hormonal system, and is considered by many naturopathic practitioners to be a good remedy for PMS and menopause symptoms such as the hot flushes.
Borage is also sometimes indicated to alleviate and heal colds, bronchitis, and respiratory infections in general for its anti-inflammatory and balsamic properties. The flowers can be prepared in infusion to take advantage of its medicinal properties.

For PMS and Menopause symptoms most studies have used Eveening Primrose oil, borage oil is implicated in helping PMS through non-controlled studies and simply because it has a high level of GLA.
Several clinical studies have reported that high doses of borage oil significantly reduce pain and swelling in arthritic joints.
