VSL#3® is a probiotic mixture containing 450 billion live lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria.

VSL#3® is the world’s most concentrated probiotic.

VSL#3® contains a unique mixture of 8 different strains of live ‘good’ bacteria.

There are 8 different strains of beneficial bacteria which were specially selected for VSL#3®, those are:
Streptococcus thermophilus
Bifidobacterium breve
Bifidobacterium longum
Bifidobacterium infantis
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus plantarum
Lactobacillus paracasei
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus

Other ingredients include: Maltose and silicon dioxide.
This product contains traces of gluten, soy, lactose and skimmed dehydrated milk.

VSL#3® is believed to be compatible with all types of drugs. If you take it with antibiotics, it will not harm you but the effects of VSL#3® will be reduced. This is because antibiotics can inactivate the beneficial bacteria in VSL#3®.

When you start taking VSL#3® you may experience bloating while the balance of bacteria in your digestive tract changes. If you experience bloating, you may need to reduce your daily intake to allow for this adjustment.

Packets should be stored in the fridge (2 - 8°c). If unopened and stored in the fridge, the product can be used up until the ‘Best if used by’ date. VSL#3® can be stored at room temperature (up to 22°c) for up to 7 days.

Dosage
Recommended Daily Intake for Adults is 1-2 sachets of VSL#3® per day.

Open the sachet and stir the contents into cold water or any non-fizzy liquid and drink. It can take a few days or weeks for the balance of bacteria in the gut to adjust and may take up to one month for it to become stable.

Does it work?
In an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 25 diarrhoea-predominant IBS patients VSL#3® was helpful in reducing bloating symptoms by 39% cxompared to the placebo.

VSL#3® in the Dietary Management of Flatulence (gas)
In a second 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 48 IBS patients VSL#3® was helpful in reduign the symptoms of flatulance by 25% compared to the placebo.

Positive trends noted
Additional positive trends were noted in randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled 2003 trial. Kim et al. reported a reduction in the urgency in diarrhoea-predominant IBS patients involved in the trial.
